In the new episode out today, I pose a question: Does our democracy demand that a politician endorse a leader of a hate movement simply because they’re from the same political party?

The simple answer is: obviously, no. But try telling that to people who are so caught up in partisan thinking that they sacrifice basic principles.

This is the story of Rep. Haley Stevens, a Michigan Democrat who responded to me following a recent episode. It’s also the story of how a “party over country” mentality is damaging our society and burying the truth. Along the way, we hear from Hillary Clinton and a presidential historian. And we hear deafening silence about this from the media.

A couple of episodes back, I highlighted a viral clip of Stevens. When an antizionist agitator harassed her and called for her death, she stood her ground and called antizionism what it is: a hate movement. It was a refreshing moment of moral clarity.

But Stevens has also endorsed a candidate who would lead that hate movement in the Senate. After losing the primary to Abdul El-Sayed, she threw her support behind him. When I called this out, she wrote me, “Are you asking me to ignore or avoid a core tenet of our democracy?”

Huh? Today, I break down that defense, the mentality it speaks to, and the deafening silence from the media. Mainstream news giants love to publish and broadcast calls for putting “country over party.” But when an egregious case of party-first allegiance happens on the left, they give it a pass.
