Trump and Netanyahu announced yet another offer to Hamas, and big mainstream media wasted no time jumping to predictable narratives. People are being called on to “analyze” the 20-point plan, which would be fine if they had track records of knowing facts.
The initial coverage is also missing a central point: Successful reconstruction of Gaza requires ideological reconstruction. The region has long been run by Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiya, known by the acronym “Hamas.” Like many other Islamist terrorist organizations, it is a death cult — a term generally defined as a religious group that celebrates death. Hamas fits the bill.
The media should be helping audiences understand the reality.
If more journalists knew history, they’d know that the United States has experience with this. While occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan were largely disastrous, the Allied Forces occupation of Germany after World War II was essential for denazification, and setting it on a path toward democracy. There are lessons to be learned, both good and bad.
The need to deradicalize and denazify (yes) Gaza raises important questions that the media should be exploring: What goals exist for a post-war international occupation? What will the measurements for success be? What will happen with the disastrous United Nations, one of the most destructive forces in Gaza? The U.N. Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) is designed to make Arabs in Gaza and the West Bank permanent refugees with a victim mentality, unlike everyone else on Earth.
