People looking for an emergency brake on the wildest excesses of the Trump administration are breathing a sigh of relief. The “blue tsunami” happened in the midterms. There are reasons for hope. One especially bright spot: Ohio, where Dr. Amy Acton beat out Vivek Ramaswamy and will make history as the state’s first Jewish governor.
But everyone committed to democracy must also understand what the mainstream media doesn’t explain: Anti-democratic dangers are growing on the left, too. The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have called for the end of our democratic form of government. They used the tsunami to usher in a wave of extremists.
With great power comes great responsibility. (A lesson taught across the centuries and popularized by Stan Lee in Spider-Man.) Everyone who helped bring in this new Congress has a moral obligation to demand Democrats limit the power of the bigots in their midst. Both major parties must purge their worst elements.
The media is inundating us with claims about the electorate, demographics, and voting blocs. But news giants have a long history of getting those claims wildly wrong.
