Even amid the horror in Minneapolis, the media knows there are other stories to cover. So as I write this, the New York Times’ main page has offerings like, “Want Nirvana? Try a Colonoscopy.” Here’s what the site’s main page does not have: any mention of Iran.
From two decades in Big Media, I know how this works. Different sections get main page “real estate,” and clickbait headlines drive traffic. But I kept scrolling, hoping that maybe the world’s biggest story of mass killing would be there somewhere. Nothing. (Some Times folks read this newsletter, so maybe by the time you read this, that will have been rectified.)
Worry not, though. On Sunday, by far the most read edition of the paper, the Times did get Iran onto its front page. Well, sort of:
If you know people from Iran, now’s probably a good time to reach out to them. Many are suffering trauma. They know people who are being raped, tortured, and killed by government forces. Reports from activist groups suggest killings on a massive scale, potentially in the tens of thousands, in just a matter of days.
Of course, in this case Big Media are emphasizing that they can’t possibly know the death toll. Yet when Iran’s proxy Hamas claimed death toll figures in Gaza, these same news agencies reported those figures as unattributed fact.
Why the relative crickets, or tumbleweeds, about what’s happening in Iran?
Sites like the Times find themselves facing quite a conundrum. After refusing to acknowledge that Islamist terrorism exists (zero headlines in all of 2025), they find that people expect them to cover an Islamist regime terrorizing its own people.
