More to come on all that in further newsletters. But for today, I’ll focus on key points the news is ignoring about Iran.
Bellicose rants, unprecedented for a U.S. president, are a Trump hallmark. In that context, his latest rhetoric is not shocking, even though it should be. “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,” Trump posted. “I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.” That was before a two-week ceasefire was announced.
News organizations rushed to tell us why Trump’s remarks were so offensive and dangerous. They were, indeed, both. “Civilization” goes far beyond a government.
AND the media left out crucial context. Iran has spent decades chanting “Death to America.” A U.S. leader has now, one time, said something similar in response. That doesn’t make it OK; it’s just factually what happened.
In their coverage, news giants are suddenly oh-so concerned about Iran’s civilians—the same people they mostly ignored while the Islamist regime was slaughtering tens of thousands and raping girls and women so they wouldn’t go to heaven. The New York Times didn’t consider any of that “fit to print” on its front pages.
The media is also pushing a strange, nonsensical idea that this war has always been the United States and Israel against the entire rest of the world.
Meanwhile, the far left and far right are bringing the political horseshoe to a complete circle. Left-wing podcaster Jon Favreau, a former Obama speechwriter, posted a two-hour plus video from right-wing podcaster Tucker Carlson, a Holocaust-denying, Qatar-loving antisemite.
Former They Stand Corrected guest Gregg Roman, whose predictions about Iran proved stunningly accurate, has called Carlson “Tehran’s most effective English-language propagandist.”
Now that Carlson is speaking out against Trump and this war, the left is “signal boosting” him — actively encouraging people to pay attention to him. That includes Vox, the left-wing media outlet that recently platformed Carlson. Last week, I delved into Vox’s journalistic disasters.
None of these folks seem to care that Carlson previously asked, “Why don’t we just nuke Tehran?” He was responding to reports of the Iranian regime attempting to assassinate Trump. Prosecutors under both the Biden and Trump administrations have said that is the case.
It’s crucial to remember that non-democratic nations have a huge advantage. Without having to worry about pesky things like what the people want, they can spend decades hiding military infrastructure, with no risk of an opposition party coming into office and leaking the information. And they can launch the world’s most powerful, long-term influence campaigns through memetic warfare.

What should happen next is subjective. But opinions are only worth hearing from people who know facts in the first place. That requires trustworthy sources of truth. By failing to do its job, the media has helped get us into this mess.
