I remember a brief spate of coverage about China's repression of the Uyghurs after the detention/prison system was built (IIRC articles spiked ~2019 before sinking back to the usual inattention). Under those articles came a flood of comments from deranged (and suspiciously coordinated) online trolls/useful idiots, rejecting eyewitness testimony and satellite imagery. Most horrifying chorus of denial in the face of incontrovertible evidence I ever saw before Oct 7th.
I remember there was a spike in the science fiction/fantasy news about the Uyghur genocide when Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu was adapted by Netflix. Initially, they were going to use at least part of the cast and crew from the Chinese-produced series and have author involvement , but there was backlash because of what China is/was doing to the Uyghurs. This was 2024. Part of the issue was none of the Chinese cast and crew or the author would speak out about it. I don’t think people fully understand what would happen to those actors, producers, crew members, the author of the books, or their families if they did speak out. Unlike the Israeli film producer that was recently barred from a festival despite his anti-Israel stance.

Yup, the denial is astounding. The old image of villagers with torches has morphed into millions, even billions of people joining a hate movement.
It's a very depressing world we live in. So much horror, so much suffering.
