Great question! In my episode on "international law," I explained that finding real experts requires thinking in terms of a venn diagram. News agencies need to consider who has demonstrated knowledge on the wide array of international agreements, and who has specific knowledge about this operation. Find where those two things overlap. This also requires fact checking -- seeing whether they have a track record of accuracy in their analyses. I know from my time inside news agencies that this is not part of the process. Instead, people just look at titles.
When you follow this process, you virtually always find that only a handful of people fall into the overlap.
